Why MMJ has Gained Popularity in FL

March 4, 2022

The passage of the Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act in 2014, saw the state of Florida become the 22nd state to legalize access to Medical Marijuana (MMJ). This allows patients suffering from specific medical ailments to receive access to cannabis containing less than 0.8% THC and at least 10% CBD.

As of May 2021, there are over 561,177 MMJ card holders in the state of Florida. After California, Florida has the 2nd highest number of MMJ users in the UnitedStates. Approximately 2.6% of Florida residents use MMJ in relief of various conditions.

Despite a number of studies over the years that tout the medical benefits and safety profile of using medical marijuana, it is still classified as a Schedule I substance. Residents of Florida, however, are able to avail themselves of the medicinal properties of cannabis by obtaining an MMJ card.

In a  recent study of demographic stratification amongst Florida MMJ patients, it was found that 94% did not feel any addiction or dependency upon cannabis. Importantly, the study also revealed that around 65% of MMJ patients have been able to completely discontinue or reduce the use of prescription opioids and over-the-counter medications.

Cannabinoids’ ability to alleviate pain via mechanisms in the body’s Endocannabinoid System make MMJ a much safer option than opioids. This alone makes it a preferred option for Florida residents who have to live with chronic pain.

Additionally, almost 82% of the study participants reported  symptoms of anxiety and stress. Their use of MMJ as treatment resulted in around 87% of these users reporting significant or complete relief of their anxiety and stress. Given that almost one third of Americans experience some type of anxiety in their lives, the ability of MMJ in reducing their symptoms is another reason Florida residents are turning to Cannabis for relief.

Another revealing aspect of the study is that many MMJ patients have reported total or consequential relief of symptoms due to inflammation. Other patients touted relief from the symptoms of various other conditions including: depression, substance abuse, chronic migraines, ADHD, and sleep disorders.

The study shows that the therapeutic effects of MMJ are many and varied and that Florida residents have a new weapon to combat the symptoms of chronic c

Though Florida has the highest number of residents over 65, the typical use of MMJ among patients in Florida is between the ages of 35 – 45 years old.

To recap, Florida patients use MMJ to treat conditions such as pain, cancer, HIV/AIDS, PTSD, ALS, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s,  Multiple sclerosis and other conditions determined by their doctor.

Unfortunately, the study also revealed that most patients were not duly informed about MMJ and its therapeutic use by their own personal physicians and doctors. Many have been relying on information provided by their dispensary. As a certified cannabis doctor, Dr. Fandino-Sende is uniquely qualified to make professional recommendations enabling the receipt of a MMJ Card from the state of Florida.

The study above proves that MMJ cards are in use across all demographics – age, gender and even race and are a reliable method in combating health conditions.
