Statistics on Medical Marijuana Usage in Florida

November 1, 2021

With the passage of the Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act in 2014, Florida became the 22nd state to legalize access to Medical Marijuana (MMJ). This allows patients suffering from cancer, chronic seizures, or persistent muscle spasms to have access to cannabis products with less than 0.8% THC and at least 10% CBD.

Currently, there are over 440,000 MMJ patients in the state of Florida – up 28% since January 2020. Additionally, Florida’s cannabis market is worth $1 billion.

Medical Marijuana laws in Florida require eligibility to be admitted into the program. These are: Residency Requirements, medical records from the patients’ own physician and then a final approval by an MMJ Doctor.

MMJ cards are very popular among Florida residents who are looking for relief from various health conditions.

A recent study set out to determine demographic stratification amongst Florida MMJ card holders.

Though hitherto this point the typical MMJ patient has been white, male, and between the ages of 35 – 45 years old, the Florida study touted 59.2% of participants as being female.

Most of the study participants (75.2%) had used marijuana before receiving their MMJ card. Patients in the study were also found to typically medicate daily and prefer smoking as their method of administration.

Florida patients are allowed to use Medical Marijuana to treat specific conditions, such as chronic non-malignant pain, terminal illness, cancer, HIV/AIDS, PTSD among others that a doctor may determine. The most common conditions that participants reported treating with MMJ were “pain, back problems, muscle spasms, anxiety, depression, and insomnia.”

The study, importantly, found that a majority (65%) of patients reported either a reduction or a total discontinuation of at least one of their prescription or over-the- counter drugs due to the use of MMJ. Patients reported either a lot or almost complete relief for their symptoms.

Additionally, 82% of the patients surveyed, indicated feeling symptoms of anxiety stress. These same patients reported complete relief of anxiety and stress from MMJ use. Given the fact that almost 5.9 million Americans reported misusing medications such as benzodiazepines in an effort to relieve stress and anxiety, the benefit and effectiveness of Medical Marijuana is important.
