Recently, our Spring Congress Event Planner, Malak Sidky, had the pleasure of chatting with Dr. Fernando Fandiño-Sende. He is a Board Certified Internal Medicine and Cardiologist with more than 30 years of experience in the medical field. He is also the founder of LifeCannMD, which is dedicated to the evaluation, education, and treatment of patients who qualify for medical cannabis.
At the upcoming American College of CBD & Cannabis’ Spring Congress, Dr. Sende will be addressing the intriguing topic of using your endocannabinoid system to treat cardiovascular disease. This includes patients with angina, cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation and arrythmias.
How can cannabis possibly aid in the treatment of these complex cardiac conditions? It all hinges on the fact that there are CB1 and CB2 receptors in the heart. Therefore patients are benefiting from this novel therapy by utilizing their own systems. Studies have shown that when you stimulate the CB2 receptors, it has an anti-inflammatory effect. This is very useful for patients with atrial myopathy as the upper chambers are weak. Cannabis is an alternative to the traditional pharmacotherapy. In the United States, it is not yet allowed to conduct clinical trials in the field of cardiovascular health, however, there are animal as well as in vitro studies that show the potential of cannabis in the treatment of cardiovascular conditions.
As these examples illustrate, cannabis is the new frontier of medicine. A wide range of cardiovascular applications are being discovered daily with the patient experience demonstrating that the body can indeed heal itself with the help of cannabis.
